Okta - the identity and access management company - just unveiled a framework for managing AI agents. Not AI features in existing products. Not AI-powered security tools. Actual autonomous agents that need their own credentials, permissions, and audit trails.
This announcement tells you two things: first, enterprises are deploying AI agents at scale. Second, nobody knows how to manage their access, and Okta smells a market opportunity before the regulatory hammer drops.
The Problem Okta Is Solving
Traditional identity management assumes the user is a human. You issue credentials, enforce MFA, log access, and revoke permissions when someone leaves. The model breaks when the "user" is an AI agent that:
- Runs continuously without human supervision
- Accesses multiple systems on behalf of different users

- Assign unique identities - Every agent gets its own credentials. No shared service accounts.
- Enforce least privilege - Agents get the minimum access they need. No lazy "grant admin and move on."
- Log everything - Every agent action gets recorded with enough detail to reconstruct what happened and why.
- Require human approval for high-risk actions - Payments, data deletion, system changes - these need a human in the loop.
- Build decommissioning processes - When you retire an agent, revoke its access immediately. Don't let zombie credentials linger.
This isn't optional. It's the baseline for not getting destroyed in a breach investigation or compliance audit.
The Market Signal
Okta building an AI agent identity framework is a market signal: enterprises are serious about AI agents, and they're starting to worry about the liability. The companies that get ahead of this will avoid the expensive scramble when regulators start asking questions.
The companies that treat AI agents as "just another API integration" will spend the next three years explaining to auditors why they have no idea which agent accessed which data and when.
