LiteLLM versions 1.82.7 and 1.82.8 were compromised on PyPI. If you run AI infrastructure and pulled either version between publication and takedown, you have a disclosure clock running.

The attack targeted an AI proxy library used to route calls across multiple LLM providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure, Bedrock). Compromised packages can exfiltrate API keys, credentials, and prompts. Discovery scope in a supply chain incident extends to everything that library touched.

What Happened

LiteLLM is a Python library that abstracts API calls to different LLM providers. It handles authentication, retries, load balancing, and cost tracking. Popular in production AI systems.

Between March 23-25, 2026, two malicious versions (1.82.7 and 1.82.8) were published to PyPI. The compromised packages contained modified code designed to exfiltrate credentials and potentially intercept LLM traffic.

The maintainers flagged the compromise on GitHub after users reported suspicious behavior. PyPI pulled both versions, but any system that auto-updated or manually installed during that window is exposed.

Most breach notification laws measure from when you "knew or should have known" about unauthorized access. For supply chain compromises, that clock starts when the maintainer announces the backdoor, not when you check your logs.

If you run LiteLLM in production:

  1. Check installed versions immediately (pip show litellm).
  2. If you have 1.82.7 or 1.82.8, assume credential exfiltration occurred.
  3. Rotate all API keys that library could access (OpenAI, Anthropic, AWS, Azure, Google).
  4. Review logs for unauthorized API usage (unexpected models, regions, or spend spikes).
  5. Document the timeline: when you installed, when you discovered, when you remediated.

Most jurisdictions give 72 hours from discovery to notify regulators. Some require immediate customer notification if personal data was processed through compromised LLM calls.

Why Supply Chain Incidents Hit Harder

Traditional breach response assumes you control the vulnerable system. Supply chain compromises invert that assumption. You trusted code someone else published, and now you're liable for what it did.

Discovery obligations extend beyond your infrastructure:

  • API providers: Did the backdoored library send credentials to unauthorized endpoints?
  • Customers: If you run AI services for clients, their data may have been exposed through compromised prompts or responses.
  • Third-party integrations: If LiteLLM routed calls to partner APIs, they need notification too.

Forensic scope expands because you don't control the payload. You're reconstructing what a library could have exfiltrated, not just what left your network.

The Notification Cascade

If you're running LiteLLM as part of a SaaS product:

  1. Your customers need notification (they're data controllers under GDPR).
  2. Your API providers need notification (compromised keys = unauthorized access).
  3. Your internal teams need forensic access to prod logs (legal hold applies).

If you're a customer of a SaaS platform that uses LiteLLM, you should be receiving notification from your vendor. If you're not, that's a separate compliance failure.

What Makes This Evidence

In litigation or regulatory investigation, expect discovery around:

  • Dependency management: How did you pin versions? Why did you accept 1.82.7/1.82.8?
  • Update cadence: Did you auto-update in production without testing?
  • Credential rotation policy: How often did you rotate API keys before the breach?
  • Monitoring: What would have flagged unusual API traffic from LiteLLM?
  • Vendor risk assessment: Did you evaluate the security posture of PyPI dependencies?

If your answer is "we trusted PyPI" or "the library had good GitHub stars," expect that to become Exhibit A in a negligence claim.

What Should Have Been Logged

Post-incident, regulators and litigants will ask what you logged:

  • Every API call LiteLLM made (timestamp, provider, model, token count).
  • Credential usage by service (which keys authenticated which calls).
  • Anomaly detection on API spend (did usage spike after 1.82.7 install?).
  • Dependency change logs (when did 1.82.7 enter your environment?).

If you can't reconstruct the exposure window because logging was insufficient, expect your breach notification timeline to expand. "We don't know when it started" triggers mandatory disclosure in most jurisdictions.

What to Fix

Supply chain risk isn't optional anymore. If you run production systems with external dependencies:

  1. Pin exact versions. Never auto-update libraries in production without testing.
  2. Use hash verification. Compare checksums against known-good releases before installing.
  3. Monitor dependency changes. Tools like Dependabot or Renovate should flag version bumps for review, not auto-merge them.
  4. Rotate credentials proactively. API keys should expire, not live forever in environment variables.
  5. Log everything outbound. If a library phones home, you should see it in egress logs.

The "move fast" model doesn't survive a supply chain breach. Reasonable security now includes dependency vetting, and courts are starting to agree.
